midwifery education in South East Asia

Midwifery education is integrated in the nursing programmes in countries like Bhutan, DPR Korea, India Nepal, and Thailand. In some countries like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, midwifery education is offered to those who have already completed Diploma in Nursing. Countries such as Indonesia and Myanmar offer a separate programme in midwifery. This is stipulates programmes, entry requirement and duration of study and number of normal deliveries required.

Note: Bangladesh also has under the Family Planning Directorate an 18-month course for Family Planning Visitor (FPV) in which six of the 18 months cover obstetric/maternal health. The FPV has to conduct 10-20 deliveries and is placed at thana & union level. The registration is with the Bangladesh Nursing Council. The Bangladesh Red Crescent educates junior midwives with an 18-month training programme, but it is not on a regular basis. The registration is with the Bangladesh Nursing Council.
